Conscious Costa Rica
Travelling is more than just an adventure; it’s an opportunity to make a positive impact. While discovering new places and cultures, it’s essential to consider the effects of our journeys on the environment and local communities.
Here’s the reality: the tourism industry accounts for around 8% of global carbon emissions. Tourists contribute over 300 million tons of plastic waste each year, and a typical hotel stay can use 300 liters of water per night, putting a strain on already stressed resources.
But there’s another side to the story. Tourism is a powerful economic engine, creating over 330 million jobs worldwide—1 in every 10 jobs. In developing countries, tourism can make up to 40% of the GDP, providing essential income and opportunities. Equally important, tourism has the power to build mutual respect and understanding between people from diverse backgrounds and cultures.
So, how do we strike a balance between the benefits and drawbacks of travel? By becoming a conscious traveler.
Here are 4 simple principles to help you travel more responsibly:
Choose an Eco-Friendly Destination: Start by selecting destinations that prioritize ecotourism—responsible travel that conserves the environment and enhances the well-being of local communities. Countries like Costa Rica are leaders in this area!
Conserve Resources: Be mindful of resource use, especially in regions with scarce water and energy. Opt for accommodations that implement sustainable practices such as recycling, energy-efficient lighting, and water-saving measures.
Support Local Economies: Dine at local restaurants, shop from local artisans, and choose local guides. This way, your travel dollars go directly into the community, helping it thrive.
Minimize Environmental Impact: Reduce your carbon footprint using eco-friendly transportation when possible - think electric golf carts. Avoid single-use plastics by bringing reusable items like water bottles, bags, and utensils. Participate in conservation efforts by visiting national parks and protected areas responsibly.
How RALIA Encourages Conscious Travel in Costa Rica
As the owners of a rental villa on the Pacific coast of Costa Rica, we are deeply committed to promoting conscious travel to protect the region and its people. Here’s how we aim to make a difference:
Avoiding Single-Use Plastics: We use refillable dispensers for shampoo, conditioner, soap, and detergents. We also source fruits and vegetables in reusable containers and encourage our guests to do the same.
Sustainable Water Management: Our villa’s water system is designed for minimizing need for water. The complex recycles 80-90% of treated water for our gardens and use 100% of laundry water for irrigation. There is also an underground tank to handle overflow and rainwater.
Eco-Friendly and Local Products: We prioritize using eco-friendly laundry detergents, soaps, shampoos, and conditioners to avoid harming the beneficial bacteria in our waste treatment systems. All sourced from local companies.
Supporting the Local Economy: We employ local Costa Ricans for all positions at our property and source products and promote experiences from local providers. Supporting the local community is a core value for us.
Encouraging Eco-Friendly Transportation: We offer electric golf carts and the new electric tourist car, Nuvo, to our guests as a clean and convenient way to explore the area.
Now it’s your turn to plan your next conscious trip. Where will your travels take you?
